Great tips and a healthy recipe for your Fourth of July

I love the Fourth of July! Over the years it has become one of my favorite holidays. I love the food, weather, family time and all the festivities that come with this awesome holiday! Although, the 4th can be a tricky day (or weekend) to stay on track, here are a few tips to help you enjoy this holiday while not completely blowing your healthy routine.

  1. Get up and workout! Do not skip your exercise on the 4th and the days leading up to it. I suggest an interval or cardio fat burning workout for maximum calorie burn to combat the extra food and drinks.
  2.  Take something healthy to your BBQ or gathering. You can take your classic dessert as well but make sure you bring something nutritious so you have a good option to put on your plate when you are there. Need an idea?? Check out my Red, White and Blue Spinach Salad Recipe below.
  3. Try not to graze and snack before the meal. Then when it’s time to eat, fill your plate with veggies and protein first. This will hopefully help you keep the unhealthy items to a minimum.
  4. Choose wisely on your alcohol consumption and drink plenty of water. Make sure know the nutrition content of what you are consuming in your favorite adult beverage. How many calories and carbohydrates are in your drink of choice? Can you find something with less? I like the seltzer drinks myself. Most are 90-100 calories and only 2-3 carbs. Also try to consume a glass of H20 between each alcoholic drink.

This is one of my favorite summer salads and it great for the 4th of July!

RED, WHITE AND BLUE SPINACH SALAD

1 Small Container of Organic Pre-Washed Baby Spinach or any Greens
1 Cup Blueberries
1 Cup Diced Strawberries
1/4 Cup Chopped Green Onion
1/4 Cup Chopped Red Onion
1/2 Cup Chopped Walnuts
1/2 Cup Crumbled Goat Cheese
Pour spinach in bowl, add toppings and keep chilled until ready to eat. I serve with a low sugar Strawberry Poppy Seed Vinaigrette. This salad is not only festive but very fresh and delicious! Enjoy!

Have a Happy and Healthy 4th of July!
